Job Description

  • Ensure and oversee the care that is delivered to all patients in the unit is safe, appropriate and effective.
  • Determine nursing interventions based on assessment data. Prioritizes identified needs,
  • Implement nursing actions and evaluates patient outcomes. Develops or revises the plan of care
  • Deliver identified patient needs.
  • Co-ordinate the overall clinical activities of the unit when assigned to the charge nurse role.
  • Collaborate with the Nursing Supervisor on staffing for a particular shift.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate clinical programs. Evaluate the ability of the patient/family/significant others to understand and participate in decisions about their care.
  • Facilitate patient education. Maintains accurate clinical records.
  • Perform advanced or specialized nursing skills competently and independently. 
  • Maintain current knowledge of clinical nursing practice. 
  • Act as a clinical resource for staff on unit.
  • Communicate and consult with other health care disciplines. Act as a patient advocate.
  • Represent nursing at multidisciplinary rounds.
  • Participate in the development of standards, procedures and protocols.
  • Facilitate evidence based practice. 
  • Promote change in nursing practice when required.
  • Take a proactive role under the guidance of Nursing Management/Nursing Education in training, education and CQI activities of nursing staff. 
  • Promote a learning environment.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Perform other professional duties as may be assigned within his/her scope and ability. 

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for crash cart and disaster preparedness cart in the OPD.
  • Maintenance of equipment, drug and consumable stock in the unit.
  • Conduct regular nursing rounds and receive feedback from doctors and patients.
  • Responsible for supervision of the nurses and ward attendants. 
  • Conduct monthly meetings and departmental drills
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care given to patients in an effective and organized manner in the Inpatient ward
  • Directs and supervises all administrative and clinical activities in Inpatient Departments
  • Ensures good communication with the multidisciplinary team to ensure high quality care is given to all patients.
  • Ensures initial assessment and reassessment of patients in the department are completed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of electronic fetal monitoring using CTG and central monitoring system (ie OB TV)
  • Demonstrates skills in routine care for newborns, rooming in with mothers.
  • Participates in emergency code drills and performs when necessary
  • Demonstrates ability to delegate tasks as per staff skills and scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and able to provide care to all Specialties that falls within the hospitals scope of practice.Demonstrates knowledge in caring for patients admitted for induction of labor.
  • Follows IV protocols as per hospital policy/guidelines and initiates Intravenous Therapy as per Doctors orders
  • Performs post-partum care of mother, performs fundal massage and monitors vital signs, blood loss as needed and promotes newborn/parent bonding
  • Ensures  the Appropriateness review of medications is completed
  • Responsible for coordinating with the Obstetrician, Neonatologist / Pediatrician and other allied workers to provide comprehensive care to patients.
  • Responsible for ensuring aseptic techniques are followed while performing various procedures.
  • Ensures correct infection control practices are maintained within the unit.
  • Actively promotes and assists mothers with breastfeeding, basic newborn care and provides patient education.
  • Has skills and knowledge on collection of specimens, bloods for diagnostic testing and critical values
  • Knowledge on ordering blood products and monitoring patients when receiving blood products.
  • Ensures staffs have knowledge of Obstetric emergencies, nursing management and care as per protocols.
  • Provides appropriate health education to patients and their family.
  • Performs nursing procedures with attention to accuracy, patient safety and comfort, including those requiring strict aseptic technique.

Qualifications

  • Evidenced experience/expertise in the clinical field in which they are employed
  • Evidenced ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Organizational and administrative skills with which to use the HIS platform for clinical documentation
