Responsible for assisting the Director of Nursing in providing professional leadership and strategic direction to the nursing services. Responsible for administrative, clinical and operational functions of their assigned area (s) of responsibility. Participates as a member of the nursing executive team in the formulation of strategic plan/business plan. Responsible for the implementation and delivery of age appropriate patient care congruent with the mission, vision and values of the Organization. Responsible for ensuring nursing/midwifery staff adheres to the Professional Code of Conduct and Scope of Practice of the regulatory body. Promotes professional Nursing/Midwifery practice and quality of care within the organizational setting.
Responsibilities
- Works closely with senior nursing staff in the assigned areas to ensure that quality of nursing of care is being delivered.
- Participates in and supports a collaborative patient care model.
- Ensures the development of policies, guidelines, protocols, for assigned area.
- Encourages and supports research and evidence-based practice within Nursing and Midwifery.
- Encourages and supports professional development and continuing education of all staff.
- Provides input into Executive level decisions.
- Support and work in partnership with the nursing executive in setting the strategic direction for the nursing/midwifery department.
- In collaboration with the nursing executive ensure that Nursing and Midwifery strategies are attained.
- Demonstrates the ability to lead change with positive outcomes in a highly complex environment.
- Demonstrates critical thinking and provides leadership in conflict management and problem solving.
- Participates in committees, task force, interdisciplinary or interdepartmental may be required to chair, co-chair or lead such groups.
- Creates and encourages a culture for staff to acquire new skills, identify and develop new ideas and outcomes that supports the organizational goals.
- An integral participant in the budgetary process for the area (s) of responsibility and provides recommendations and supporting data for suggested changes.
- Support and lead on operational issues with the executive team members, which may include capacity and utilization forecasting, workforce planning, performance and budget management.
- Responsible for participation in the collaborative development and evaluation of care pathways / clinical guidelines.
- Ensure patient care areas have the necessary equipment, supplies, and staffing available for the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
- Ensure that performance improvement plans are in place, monitored and accomplished.
- Liaises with Medical Heads of Department, Administrators and non clinical Staff regarding assigned areas maintaining an effective working relationship with the Interdisciplinary team.
- Participates in the Nursing Administration ‘on-call’ duty roster.
- Assumes duties of the Director of Nursing as requested by the Chief Nursing Officer in the planned or unplanned absence of the Director of Nursing.
- Participates in the implementation of standards required by the JCI Accreditation Commission and HA-AD Regulations. Management of Clinical Practice Maintains and demonstrates contemporary knowledge in the administration of healthcare organizations to advance nursing practice and the provisions of quality healthcare and nursing services.
- Maintains confidentiality and security of patient, family, and the organization information in accordance with the confidentiality policy.
- Monitors the adherence of nursing practice against the Policy and Procedures of the organization.
- Monitors staffing levels and efficient use of material resources and assists in recruitment of Nursing Staff.
- Provide effective leadership to the nursing/midwifery profession within assigned areas, collaborates with the DON in the development and evaluation of organisation structures and processes to promote evidence based, patient focused quality care.
- As a member of the nurse executive team, assist in the implementation of plans, projects, and programs to meet the critical success factors of the health service, health provider teams and the organization.
- Provides input for plans, projects and programs for their assigned areas and or the Nursing/Midwifery Department.
Communication Ensure that the Director of Nursing/Midwifery receives appropriate and timely information, necessary to fulfil the organisation’s strategic and operational plans. - Uses information technology to access, transmit and produce information as necessary
- Maintains confidentiality and security of patient, family, and organization information in accordance with the confidentiality policy
- Keep records and prepare reports of nursing service activities as / when required by the organization.
Performance Improvement/Risk Management Develops, maintains, and evaluates patient and staff data collection systems and processes to support the practice of professional nursing and delivery of patient care - Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice in their assigned services and makes corrections as needed, in discussion with the Director of Nursing/Chief Nursing Officer.

Qualifications
Qualification Required:
NLT 8 years clinical experience post qualification,and NLT 2 years in a A/DON position OR 4 years in a SeniorCharge Nurse (S.C.N.) position.
